BACHELOR VALLEY SCHOOL


The Bachelor Valley School district was formed in 1870 from part of the Upper Lake School district. The first school stood near the northwest corner of Rev. D. T. Taylor's ranch, on what is now called Foothill Road, about 3/8 of a mile northeast of the Bachelor Valley Store & Post Office. Between 1900 & 1906 a new school was built along Bachelor Valley Road West. It was a square structure with a bell tower and a bell that could be heard for miles around.

The building was heated by a large wood-burning stove, and had wall brackets which held coal oil lamps when the building was used at night. There was a water bench with a "common dipper" for all to use. The water was carried by the bigger boys from the well at the foot of the knoll. This building was also the gathering place for the community, and a Sunday School & Church when a preacher could be found. This school was used until 1920 when the school district consolidated with Upper Lake.
The building burned many years ago, and a new building was put in its place by the Bachelor Valley Community Club. The old bell was last known to be in the custody of Mr. & Mrs. Tom Turner in Bachelor Valley. (1960)
